Lukavac: My Business Will Allow Women to Express Themselves Through Fashion

Lukavac 1Azra Korlatović from Lukavac is one of the women awarded funds for launching her own business, provided by the Fund for Supporting Businesses Owned by Marginalized Women. Azra is trained in fashion design, and she always wanted to open her own tailor shop and make unique dresses.

Today, four women signed grant agreements in the cabinet of the municipal mayor of Lukavac, which will help them fund the business they plan to open in the service and production industries. In addition to the tailor shop, the women will launch a business focused on making and selling decorative stone, PET packaging and bed linens.
“I want to open a tailor shop where I will sew unique dresses, and the help of USAID and the Municipality of Lukavac will allow me to get the material I need, and pay all my taxes. I already have clients interested in my products, and my goal is to allow women to express themselves through their outfits”, said Azra, adding that she intends to hire more people.
The Fund for Businesses Owned by Marginalized Women, launched by USAID’s Marginalized Populations Support Activity (USAID/PPMG), is intended to contribute to creating an environment conducive to sustainable development of businesses owned by marginalized women by encouraging self-employment and helping women enter the world of entrepreneurship and create new jobs.
In cooperation with the Municipality of Lukavac, the USAID/PPMG provided 40,000 BAM for supporting the launch and development of four businesses owned by unemployed women from rural communities.
“To us, this is a chance to work with USAID and other relevant partners and use tested and efficient models to put all the pieces together and implement a project like this one. We know that often public money is spent ineffectively, but when it comes to this project, we expect the monitoring and support we provide to these users to ensure that the money ends up in the rights hands”, said the Mayor of the Municipality of Lukavac, Prof. Dr. Edin Delić.
In addition to financial support, the USAID/PPMG will provide mentorship and professional advice to entrepreneurs during the first year of running their business, to help them successfully launch their products and services on the market, and create more jobs.
The support provided by the Fund in 18 local communities in BiH resulted in 160 launched businesses that continue to grow, improving many household budgets and providing new jobs.
