Lopare: We Will Finally Be Able to Sell Fruit From Our Orchard

IMG 9369Vesna Perić from Lopare is one of the women awarded funds for launching her own business, provided by the Fund for Supporting Businesses Owned by Marginalized Women. Vesna runs the family plum orchard, and she will finally be able to offer her products on the market, with the help of USAID’s Marginalized Populations Support Activity (USAID/PPMG) and the Municipality of Lopare. Vesna will buy a drying kiln for fruit, vegetables and forest fruits and mushrooms so they can sell their products all year round.

Today, in the hall of the Assembly of Lopare Municipality, two women signed grant agreements that will provide them with funds to launch their own businesses: a drying kiln and a hair salon.

“We already have our own orchard and we built the necessary infrastructure. Now we need a drying kiln so we can keep our product on the market longer. We’ve been growing fruit for a while now, and are ready to turn it into a family business so we’re very grateful to USAID/PPMG and our Municipality of Lopare for helping us with our business”, said Ms. Vesna Perić, adding that they will also use the kiln for forest fruit, mushrooms and medicinal herbs.

The Fund for Businesses Owned by Marginalized Women, launched by USAID’s Marginalized Populations Support Activity (USAID/PPMG), is intended to contribute to creating an environment conducive to sustainable development of businesses owned by marginalized women by encouraging self-employment and helping women enter the world of entrepreneurship and create new jobs.

In cooperation with the Muncipality of Lopare, the USAID/PPMG provided 19,000 BAM for supporting the launch and development of two businesses owned by unemployed women from rural communities.

“It was my pleasure to sign grant agreements today with two of our fellow citizens, and USAID’s Marginalized Populations Support Activity has my gratitude.  The Assembly of the Municipality of Lopare voted on allocating 40,000 BAM out of our budget, and USAID/PPMG matched the amount with their own funds, so we will soon be issuing another public call to support even more women entrepreneurs”, said the Mayor Rado Savić.

In addition to financial support, the USAID/PPMG will provide mentorship and professional advice to entrepreneurs during the first year of running their business, to help them successfully launch their products and services on the market, and create more jobs.

The support provided by the Fund in 18 local communities in BiH resulted in 160 launched businesses that continue to grow, improving many household budgets and providing new jobs.
