Berkovići: I Moved Back From Belgrade to Launch My Own Business

IMG 8959Biljana Topolić from Berkovići is one of the women awarded funds for launching her own business, provided by the Fund for Supporting Businesses Owned by Marginalized Women. Ivana moved back from Belgrade to start a business in her home town, with the help of USAID's Marginalized Populations Support Activity (USAID/PPMG) and the Municipality of Berkovići.

Today, in the Assemby hall of the Municipality of Berkovići, Ivana and two other women received support for launching their own businesses in agriculture, cattle breeding and the service industry.

“I applied to this program for supporting marginalized women launching their own businesses. I will open a hair salon for men and women, and I wouldn’t be able to do it without the support from this program. I’m sure I will be a successful young entrepreneur”, said Ivana.

The Fund for Businesses Owned by Marginalized Women, launched by USAID’s Marginalized Populations Support Activity (USAID/PPMG), is intended to contribute to creating an environment conducive to sustainable development of businesses owned by marginalized women by encouraging self-employment and helping women enter the world of entrepreneurship and create new jobs.

In cooperation with the Municipality of Berkovići, the USAID/PPMG provided 30,000 BAM for supporting the launch and development of three businesses owned by unemployed women from rural communities.

“It is an honor and a pleasure to be signing these grant agreements with USAID’s Marginalized Populations Support Activity in Berkovići, providing support to three of our residents in their plans to launch businesses in the service industry, agriculture and cattle breeding. The Municipality of Berkovići will be at the service of women entrepreneurs and we will do our utmost to use our capacities to reduce unemployment with projects such as this one”, said the Mayor of Berkovići Municipality. Nenad Abramović.

In addition to financial support, the USAID/PPMG will provide mentorship and professional advice to entrepreneurs during the first year of running their business, to help them successfully launch their products and services on the market, and create more jobs.

The support provided by the Fund in 18 local communities in BiH resulted in 160 launched businesses that continue to grow, improving many household budgets and providing new jobs.
