USAID’S Marginalized Populations Support Activity and the Alliance Sumero signed a grant agreement for supporting the process of deinstitutionalization of persons with intellectual disabilities with 214,500 BAM.

Deinstitutionalization is a process where individuals leave institutions to live in their local community, in special housing units with 5 people or fewer.  In these communities, persons with disabilities receive adequate support, and trainings and social rehabilitation provides a degree of independence, helps them get involved in social life and gives them an opportunity for a fresh start.

“I really love it here, and I expect it to continue and I want as many young people as possible to leave institutions and institutes and to see what it’s like living in the community”, said Zlatan Horo (39), a beneficiary of the “Supported Housing in the Community” program. Zlatan added that during this program he learned a lot of practical skills and now he in independent.

Through their program “Supported housing in the community” Sumero provided housing for approximately 100 persons with disabilities in the Zenica-Doboj, Una-Sana, Central Bosnia and Sarajevo Cantons.  The new project is expected to provide support to a hundred more people. According to the latest data, 2000 persons with intellectual disabilities in BiH live in five institutes and institutions.  Persons with intellectual and other types of disabilities  who live in institutions are excluded from all aspects of social life, they don’t have access to elementary education in mainstream schools and not enough is being done to ensure inclusion.

“Since USAID is very dedicated to supporting the deinstitutionalization of persons with intellectual disabilities who are placed in institutions, this support is intended to allow these people to live in smaller communities in living conditions that are far superior to what they are provided in institutions”, said the Chief of Party of USAID’s Marginalized Populations Support Activity Jasmin Bešić.

“USAID and the US Embassy have been supporting the work of Sumero for almost a decade. This new agreement shows consistency in our efforts and indicates that people with intellectual disabilities are leaving institutes and institutions for a life in the community. Haris Haverić added that four cantons now have the necessary prerequisites to ensure dignified lives for persons with intellectual disabilities.

Over the next two years, at least 200 persons with intellectual disabilities will be able to feel the benefits of living in their communities with all the necessary support.
